Why is my house listed as pre-foreclosure on Zillow?

Seeing your own address flagged publicly is alarming. What it actually means, and what it does not.

Why does my house show as pre-foreclosure?

Because a document was filed publicly. Sites like Zillow and Realtor pull from public records, so when a lender records a notice against your property, that filing becomes visible and gets displayed.

It is not the listing site making a judgement about you. It is repeating something that already exists in the county record.

Does it mean I am losing my house?

No. Pre-foreclosure means the process has started, not that it has finished. In Minnesota, foreclosure by advertisement runs through a notice period, then a sheriff's sale, and then in most cases a redemption period during which you still own the home.

There is normally room to act. People assume the first letter is the end of the road and it is not.

Can I still sell it?

Usually yes, right up until the sheriff's sale, and often that is the better outcome. If the house is worth more than you owe, that difference belongs to you. A completed foreclosure can take it and leave a mark that follows you for years.

If you owe more than it is worth, say so early. Sometimes a structured purchase clears a balance that a straight cash offer cannot.

Can I get the flag removed?

It generally clears once the underlying filing is resolved, though the sites update on their own schedule and are often slow. Selling or curing the default is what changes the record; nothing you write to the website will.
